Secret Brands
Branding without branding is the subject of this interesting article. It focuses on two well branded, but also two well designed companies. By well designed, I mean that their business logic serves and fits their products. The cherry on top? The products of American Apparel and MUJI are both super well designed.
I have a camera case I bought in Tokyo, in my initial meeting with MUJI, and the thing is black, has a pocket and a zipper and an interior pocket and I love it. I also have a plastic pencil case, and I love it too. It's dead simple. MUJI would do well to compete with IKEA on certain items. Sadly there isn't one in Canada.

Google Talk
So google has climbed aboard the instant messaging scene and have release google talk. The nicest thing about the client I like so far is that it's super minimalistic in design; much like google itself. The other banger of a feature is voice chat, but I haven't tried it yet. Anyway, my gmail is tonikster at gmail.com -- talk me up.

Adults vs. Children
This is an interesting question: What would a child's drawing look like if it were painted realistically?
The question is posed by the people at The Monster Engine. Check out their experiments. They are kind of interesting but... isn't it a little exploitive? Cause it's not like he's making 'better' art. He's just hanging around and making the idea more 'real.' Working up the idea, and fleshing things in because he's got the skills to do what the kids can't. In more than one instance the child's drawing is way more interesting and original. The adult version seems colored in... by an adult.

Kanye West vs The Beach Boys
It's about 2 weeks before Kanye drops his sophomore project 'Late Registration' but the album is making it's way all over the interwebs. And then I find this mashup mixtape. It takes 10 Kanye accapella's and throws them against The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. - Not exactly a classic but it's kinda nice and worth a listen nevertheless.

Alife NYC
This retail space makes me think about whether or not all this t-shirt/sneakers steez is good or not. On one hand i love t-shirts and sneakers, on the other hand I yearn for the European (and old school) flavour of dressing up. Dress shoes and slacks, dresses on females, that must have been fairly dope too. I remember speaking to this old Scottish man once and he was telling me that "when I was your age Toronto was way different. Going to Yonge St. was a trip in itself. You put on some good clothes and went for a walk. You go there now and it's pretty much garbage." Maybe I'm getting old but I sort of agree with him.

Success
Just what is success? It's a good question. And it's answered in many different ways via this frank discussion by a few very intelligent people who are super well respected by me and yours. Well worth the listen...

Grid Systems in Graphic Design
So, i've added something to my amazon wishlist.
It's not a very big book, and there aren't alot of pages, but it costs $113 and tax here in Toronto. Woo! So I went the cheap route and geeked out at the Reference Library, for an hour or so. It's was time well spent. And if you're out there wondering what to get me for Xmas? There it is.
